Online Shruti Natak: “Badshahat Ka Khatma”

presented by the PhD students, Department of HSS, IISER Bhopal

You are cordially invited to a short online audio rendition of Urdu writer Sadat Hasan Manto’s 1950 short story “Badshahat Ka Khatma” organised by the Ph.D. students of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IISER Bhopal.

Subsequently, there will be a discussion based on the story and extending to the writer’s life and oeuvre.

This performance incorporates nuances of ‘Shruti Natak’ – a form of theatre practised in Bengal, which is essentially conversational without movements on the stage.

Synopsis

Manto’s short story “Badshahat Ka Khatma (The End of Kingship), composed in 1950, brings to you the dark underpinnings of a doomed generation imbued in disquietude and disappointment in the period of the post-Partition 1947. Tormented by severe angst, it talks about a youth surviving on minimal dreams.
